My sister and I have not been together for Christmas in several years. I guess we went crazy with excitement and decided to buy elf pants and dress up with reindeer antlers to commemorate the occasion. We thought we were soooooo cute! Now, after seeing the photos I’ve decided I wasn’t as cute as I thought I was and I need to LOOSE SOME WEIGHT! Good GAWD!

Let me take this moment to remind everyone that leaving your camera lying around is not a good idea. My silly brother-in-law seized on the opportunity to perfect his self-portrait taking skills! Goof ball!

Next, we drove to Huntsville for my friend’s graduation from Sam Houston State University. She has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, Minor in Political Science. After she walked across the stage we went out to eat at Crabbydaddys in The Woodlands. Food was VERY good, service was great and the friends and family were a special treat, especially this time of the year.

Congratulations, Lisa! You have a degree and many friends and family who love you and are proud of what you have been able to accomplish.

The morning after the Polar Express we celebrated Christmas with Kyleigh and Hannah. Ahhhh, to be a kid these days….Christmas lasts a week with extended families, joint custody and everyone’s hectic schedules. You have to squeeze the photo op in when you can!

We have a budding artist and a child who wants to be a mother. She is holding the baby that poops and pees. WHAT! Why would you want that? But, she loved it and we couldn’t pry it out of her arms…at least, not until it peed on her!

We had so much fun! The Polar Express train runs from the train station in Palestine, TX to Rusk, TX and takes approximately 40 minutes. During the trip you are treated to hot chocolate, candy and dancing waiters…..enough to propel any child from mild hyperactivity to super-charged delirium!

If you’d like to learn more check out their website: The train ride is inspired by the award winning book by Chris Van Allsburg.

I sometimes find, in a crystal clear moment of serendipity, words that for a while help me stop beating myself up for not doing enough or for doing too much. And, guess what. You can’t ever “win” or feel like you are enough with those two opposing views in your head! I read a bit of comfortqueen.com and found the following tranquilizer….

“There are times when we get stuck because we have forgotten how to create. We believe we have to know exactly what we are doing before we can do anything — we have to know our brand mission, our ideal customer, have a snazzy logo; We have to know our big life vision, our soul purpose, have a cute tag line; We especially have to know where we will end up before we can begin.”

I am not a follow-the-crowd type person but in this instance it gave me a great deal of comfort to know that there are others out there like me. Others who struggle with issues of creating and moving forward…….creating and standing still. It is often impossible to recognize that a day off away from the computer, away from Photoshop, away from CorelDraw is exactly the creative sludge of which so many great ideas come.

I recently received an email from Jennifer Loudon (click here for her website) that really spoke to me. It was about learning to be in the moment and to enjoy the place where you are in your life. Boring may just be the precursor to “ENJOY THE SERENITY NOW BECAUSE THERE ARE EXCITING TIMES AHEAD!”

I have a terrible habit of worrying about things I can’t control. For instance, a couple of weeks ago I was waiting for a large order from one of my customers. I felt like I couldn’t move forward on ANYTHING because I needed to have some type of resolution concerning the order. I was paralyzed. I realized that I might as well enjoy the down time so I read a few books. If your interested…..Forever Odd by Dean Koontz, The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz and Deception Point by Dan Brown. All worth the time I spent reading them. In fact, I have requested the other “Odd” books from the library. I can’t wait!

I’m just back from judging a middle school art show that determined whether the student proceeded to the state competition. What a wonderful and awkward experience. I felt somewhat intimidated by all of the other “professional” artists who were there to offer their services. The other judge I worked with in the 7th grade level was an art teacher and as far as choosing which pieces placed and the reasoning behind the decision…I was on track and we were totally together. I was relieved! Toward the end of our critique, parents and other judges started filtering through the 7th grade room. There seemed to be discourse in the 6th grade entries and their final placing. Oh! Oh! Time for me to leave! Overall, I’m glad I went and participated but WHOA! the stress level was HIGH and the weight of responsibility was un-nerving!
